Roquette Transport team is committed to reducing our carbon footprint through various initiatives, including the use of alternative fuels and transportation modes. Our teams have been actively involved in implementing these projects, in order to respond to our sustainable development objectives through our life+nature program.
Renewable Fuel and Electric Trucks
One of our key initiatives is the use of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, a renewable diesel made from 100% renewable raw materials such as waste and residues) as a biofuel. This fuel can be used without doing any change in the truck engine
In Italy, our switch to HVO will result in a decrease of 1,500 tons of CO2 emissions.
In India, we have been using CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and plan to increase its use by 12% in 2024, resulting in a saving of 5 tons of CO2.
In France, we have already transitioned one lane to Spain to HVO and plan to expand this to our bulk deliveries, which will lead to an estimated saving of 1,000 tons of CO2 in 2024.
In Benifaió, Spain, we are also using an electric truck for some of our export flows to the port of Valencia, which is the first of its kind within Roquette. Since 2023, we have also been loading a double tanker truck at Roquette in Benifaió to reduce the number of trucks on the roads and, consequently, the associated greenhouse gas emissions.
Airfreight and Multimodal Transportation
For airfreight, we have been using Sustainable Air Fuel (SAF) for 53% of our air shipments since February 2024, which has led to a reduction of 1,000 tons in CO2 emissions for an estimated in 2024. Our goal is first to reduce the use of airfreight and when we have no other choice, we will continue to increase our use of SAF for our deliveries.
In addition to these energy-related changes, we are also continuing to explore the use of intermodal transportation. This has been in place for a long time within Roquette, with 25% of packed deliveries in Italy already using multimodal transportation (rail or vessel).
In France, 10% of domestic trucking is now using multimodal transportation, and in India, we plan to increase the use of multimodal transportation by 30% in 2024.
All the efforts contribute to reducing our carbon footprint while optimizing transportation. For contributing to our sustainable development approach life+nature, our ambition is to reduce our CO2 emissions by 25% by 2030, through initiatives such as these.
